Take a stroll at the recently renovated Dawnville Park. There’s a freshly painted two-story concrete press box, underbrush was cleared on the walking track, and the concrete walkways were pressure washed. All of the work was completed during a seven-month span last year by Whitfield County Parks and Recreation staff and state prison inmates. By using manpower in-house and from prisoners, parks and recreation Director George Page said the county saved several thousand dollars. But views on using inmate labor are split on the Whitfield County Board of Commissioners. At Monday’s meeting, commissioners discussed whether inmate labor saves the county money. Commissioner Harold Brooker made a motion to reduce the crews to two from four while Commissioner Greg Jones suggested the county only hire one crew under the new contract. Read More. |
