A Charleston County (S.C.) detention officer is accused of assaulting a female inmate. Brian Britton, 26, has been charged with aggravated assault and battery. The inmate, Lavinya White, who is in jail on a forgery charge, told investigators that she and her cellmate were singing loudly and yelling on June 5 at the Charleston County Detention Center. White said Britton began removing her belongings from the cell. She said that when she protested, Britton pushed her down and punched her in the face. White's cellmate made similar statements to investigators. Britton denied assaulting White. He said he asked White and her cellmate to keep the noise down. Britton said White refused and moved toward him. He said he put his hand up to stop her, and she complied. According to reports, White was not treated for injuries and later told investigators she could not remember what part of her face was struck. Capt. Dana Valentine of the sheriff's office said Britton has been placed on unpaid administrative leave pending the result of his trial. |
