Lukus Sandoval pleaded guilty last week to second-degree murder in the November 2008 shooting death of Benjamin Griego at the Hollywood Bar. The murder — described by District Judge Leslie Gerbracht as a “crime of passion” where not enough time existed between the alleged provocation and response for the “voice or reason or humanity to be heard” — was reduced to second-degree from the original charge of first-degree murder, which would have indicated premeditation by Sandoval in Griego's death. Sandoval could be facing a range of 10 to 32 years in prison, with an accompanying fine that could vary from $3,000 to $750,000. “The sentence is entirely up to this court,” Gerbracht said. Griego's killing had been part of a double homicide at the Hollywood Bar in the early-morning of Nov. 20, 2008. Police had discovered Griego, 21, dead from multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot between his car and the front entrance to the bar. A second victim, Clifford Maes was found inside the bar, also suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He died later at Mt. San Rafael Hospital. Ronald Martinez was sentenced last summer to 42 years in the Department of Corrections for Maes' death. Read More. |
