Website Records Sex Offender Locations

The state Department of Corrections sex offender mapping website can be a useful tool, but it’s not for the faint of heart.

“There is a little bit of a wow factor,” said Lance Wiersma, director of the Sex Offender Programs for the department. “It can be a little overwhelming. You look at, ‘Where’s my house compared to all these dots on this map?’”

Since the sex offender registry and map site launched near two years ago, more than a few people have panicked at their search results. But mostly, Wiersma said, people’s eyes have been opened.

“Really what this map shows is that sex offenders cross all demographics, as far as income, race and social status, all parts of all neighborhoods,” Wiersma said. “And so people should be aware of that and shouldn’t be thinking, ‘They’re not in my neighborhood.’ ”
