ALBERTA — The weather was lovely on Thursday, July 1, for the ground breaking ceremony for the Meherrin River Regional Jail located at the intersection of Boydton Plank Road and Liberty Road. Guests from Brunswick County, Mecklenburg County and Dinwiddie County as well as from other areas came to the site for the new jail to show support for the project. Many acknowledged what could be accomplished when localities work together.

For quite some time the Meherrin River Regional Jail Authority has been working to build a regional jail in Brunswick County that would house inmates from Brunswick County, Mecklenburg County and Dinwiddie County.

Brunswick County Administrator Charlette Woolridge, who serves as Chair of the Meherrin River Regional Jail Authority, welcomed elected and appointed officials and guests. She said the new regional jail facility will be constructed on approximately 126 acres. The jail will serve a total rated capacity of 400 general purpose beds, 340 for males and 60 for females. The jail will contain an Administrative/Support Section and a Housing Section that is composed of four units for males and one unit for females.
