| Court-Ordered Offender Collections Ahead of Last Year |

(Concord, NH) Six months after the New Hampshire Department of Corrections implemented a new billing process; court-ordered collections have increased. Corrections Commissioner William L. Wrenn announced that the Division of Field Services Collections Unit had collected $3.4 million at the end of Fiscal Year 2010 compared to three million dollars the previous year. Over eight-thousand offenders on probation and parole were sent notices of the new billing process in December 2010 with the first bills mailed on January 15, 2010. By June 30, 2010 collections had increased twenty-eight percent over the previous fiscal year. Commissioner Wrenn said, “We are now utilizing the standard business model of sending bills and collecting payments. The results over the past six months have been encouraging.” The Department of Corrections oversees the collection of court-ordered financial obligations for offenders including victim restitution, fees, and fines. The Department distributes these payments to the appropriate recipients. Not all offenders with financial obligations are on probation or parole. Many are administrative or “collection only” supervision cases and they have little interaction with DOC employees. “The use of technology has helped the Department become more efficient and effective in the collection of restitution and other fees,” Commissioner Wrenn stated. |
