LONG BEACH -- A 42-year-old Long Beach man convicted in the brutal beating death of an elderly cancer patient was sentenced Thursday to a potential life prison term. Defendant Andrew Felton Odom was convicted earlier this year on a charge of second-degree murder for the 2008 slaying of Rita Wiley, 70. His attorney, Public Defender Rhonda May-Rucker, on Thursday asked that her client be sent to a state prison-run mental facility, citing about 20 years of mental health problems documented by the California Department of Corrections in Odom's previous prison or jail terms.
