Clogged toilet floods jail, office |

An inmate jammed up the plumbing last Tuesday, flooding the Jefferson County (Ill.) Jail and dispatcher's area, the sheriff confirmed. At about 3 a.m., an inmate flushed something down his commode that clogged up the lift station and backed water up into the jail area, said Sheriff Roger Mulch. Twelve hours later, the water had been pumped out, but walls and floors were still wet and deputies were still trying to figure out who was responsible, he said. With the unknown item getting as far down as the lift station, it would not be immediately apparent where it came from. Criminal charges are possible if they can narrow it down. The department may also see if it can get the inmate to pay for the repairs, which Mulch expects to be expensive. The new jail going up about a block south of the courthouse should not have such problems, he said. Each cell is equipped with a "chase" - a water removal system that has a grappling-hook-type item that catches items too big for the plumbing to handle. An inmate could still cause an overflow in his commode, but spilled water would be easily tracked to their cell. |
