The sheriff of Calhoun County (Ala.) spoke out after two of his deputies were attacked in a courtroom June 11. Rodney Pope was in court for receiving stolen property, and that's when police say he began yelling and cursing. He allegedly bit one deputy on the forearm and hit the other in the face. Both men suffered slight injuries. This is the second incident where an inmate injured a deputy in a courtroom. Sheriff Larry Amerson said more help is needed. "It's a losing proposition to try and watch that many folks, and somebody's going to be seriously hurt if we don't take appropriate steps," he said. Amerson said the two deputies were guarding 13 inmates. It is routine for one or two officers to guard 10 to 15 inmates in a courtroom. |
