A convicted copper-wiring thief escaped from the Pitkin County Courthouse Monday afternoon after he was sentenced to three years in the Colorado Department of Corrections. Local law enforcement officers apprehended him within minutes at Hallam Lake, located a few blocks away. Warren Carter, 45, who was out on bond and living in the Denver area, bolted from the second floor courtroom at about 4:10 p.m. after Pitkin County District Court Judge James Boyd sentenced him to prison for stealing copper wiring from the Residences at Little Nell while it was under construction in October 2009. But instead of taking a seat in the courtroom as he was directed to, Carter decided he wasn’t ready for incarceration and fled the courtroom on foot. Apparently, he thought he would get sentenced to drug rehabilitation and wasn’t expecting prison time, according to prosecutor Arnold Mordkin, who was seated at a table just feet away from Carter. href="http://www.aspendailynews.com/section/home/141439"target="_new">Read More. |
