n Adams County (Colo.) sheriff's deputy shot a prisoner June 11 as he tried to escape during an X-ray exam at Platte Valley Medical Center. Epifanio Chavez, 33, was hit once in the upper body. He was flown by helicopter ambulance to St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver in critical condition. The name of the deputy was not released. Chavez was not armed, said Adams County sheriff's Sgt. Louis Dixon. "The officer felt threatened at the time," Dixon said. "He was in the officer's custody at the time and the officer felt he had to defend himself and the people in the community." Chavez had been arrested hours earlier after trying to flee from Thornton police after a traffic stop, said Thornton police Sgt. Matt Barnes. He was arrested on two outstanding warrants and also faces charges of obstructing police and resisting arrest. Chavez, who had been in prison since 1991, apparently walked away from the Dahlia Community Corrections Center in Denver on March 10, said Linda Carroll, Colorado Department of Corrections spokeswoman. |
