Parole Violators Face Swift, New Punishment

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Parole violators can now expect to face swifter and harsher punishment.

Probation officers say more than half of people on parole re-offend, but sometimes it can take months before they're caught.

To change that, the Department of Corrections started a program this week meant to reduce crime and drug use by taking action immediately against offenders who violate conditions of parole.

The Pace System targets high risk offenders, if they violate their parole, police will immediately serve them a bench warrant for a special in-court hearing.

The idea is to stop bad behavior early before it grows into a major offense.
