YAKIMA - Major upgrades to the county jail. KIMA has learned Yakima county will spend more than 6 million dollars to make the changes, selling bonds to cover the cost. We discovered it could take up to ten years for the Department of Corrections to pay off the bonds. The timing seemed odd since the county is also laying off employees and cutting the budget. But KIMA learned these plans have been in the works for a while. " We're adding impenetrable mesh on the 4th floor so they can't get into crawl spaces as they have in the past," said County Commissioner, Mike Leita. Who can forget the jailbreak in 2005 that let nine inmates escape by crawling to the roof. Since then, there is a new electronic fence, and upgrades made to the roof.
