| Investigation Into Escape Shows Loose Fence |

Authorities believe a Richmond County inmate escaped custody Sunday by squeezing through a loose fence at the Charles B. Webster Dentention Center. Gerry Haynes recaptured this morningThe fence surrounding the recreation yard at the facility off Phinizy Road was moved inward almost 10 months ago, and Sheriff Ronnie Strength said today he suspects inmate Gerry Haynes might have been working on an unsecured corner since his arrival in June. “When the fence was moved in, the bottom right-hand corner of the fence was not as secure as it should have been,” Strength said. “Over a period of time he was able to work the fence loose and push it far enough so he could get out.” Strength said he is meeting with staff at the detention center to discuss ways to improve security during construction.
