(Deo Ferrer/ Democrat)With more than 3,000 inmates released early from the Yolo County Jail last year, a grand jury is recommending the Sheriff's Department expand its facilities with the use of state and federal grants. However, Sheriff Ed Prieto said grant money for additional beds won't help staff new facilities. He said he is already hanging onto eight correctional officers by a thread, and whose jobs would have been terminated July 1 without some creative revenue shifting. In a three-page letter to the Yolo County Board of Supervisors in May, Prieto requested that his department be fully funded to protect public safety. He also asked that a salary and responsibility survey be completed to compare the similarity in pay for some administrative and public safety positions to the disparity in the responsibility of those positions. For example, a deputy sheriff makes $63,048 while a county supervisor's deputy makes $63,528. A principal management analyst makes $105,084 and a sheriff's captain makes $102,612. Read More. |
