A suicide note carved into the cell wall at the old Jefferson County Jail reads, "I love you. I'm sorry. I'll see you in the next life." After 52 years, what was once among the most inescapable lockups in the country soon will be demolished. "It was a big deal back then, and now we look at it and say, 'Wow, how archaic is it?' " said sheriff's spokesman Mark Techmeyer. From 1958 until 1984, the jail housed prisoners for a few hours or for up to two years.
