School Labor By Inmates Causing Debate

AUGUSTA---Despite a "no" vote earlier this month from a Board of Education subcommittee, the idea of using jail inmates to do upkeep work at Richmond County schools is still very much alive.

Inmates walk the grounds freely at Richmond County Correctional Institution. Every inmate has a job. Their newest assignment could be helping keep up the grounds at Richmond County schools, if the school board and commissioners sign off.

"It just presents itself as a bad situation," said Commissioner Don Grantham.

"Is there any need for folks to be concerned?" we asked Deputy Warden Jimmie Blackburn.
