Maximum Sentenced Requested By Convicted

At his own insistence, a Jacksonville man was sentenced Tuesday to the maximum prison time for a burglary charge stemming from demanding money at Jacksonville bank in February.

Jerome M. Walters, 58, of 1208 Allen Ave. told Circuit Judge Richard Mitchell he wanted to be sentenced to the maximum of seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

With the exception of one prior misdemeanor conviction, Walters had no criminal history.

“Most defendants under those circumstances would be a strong candidate for probation,” said court-appointed attorney Thomas Piper. Piper said he tried to talk him out of it.
