An Allendale Correctional Institution (S.C.) employee has been charged with smuggling in a gun used in April to shoot two inmates. Kezia Fennell of Brunson is charged with criminal conspiracy. Officials would not release information about Fennell's job or her status with the Department of Corrections. Corrections and the State Law Enforcement Division still are investigating the shooting, SLED spokeswoman Kathryn Richardson said. She would not say whether the gun has been found. Corrections Department inspector general Charles Sheppard declined Wednesday to discuss the latest charge. Corrections investigator Richard Johnson said in a June 4 warrant that Fennell was paid $250 to sneak the gun to inmates Dean Ford, 29, and George Brown, 34. Ford and Brown were shot by a third inmate while the two ate in a cell. Investigators have not named the shooter. On May 20, Corrections officials charged Ford and Jessica M. Hanna of Lancaster with conspiring to get a .25-caliber handgun to smuggle into the Lowcountry prison. Corrections conducted its own investigation of the shooting for about two weeks before asking SLED for help. The agency joined the investigation in early May. |
