County Jail Unit Closes

A for-profit unit of the county jail will close by the end of the year if Sheriff Randy Stammen follows through with the recommendation of the Sauk County Board, which voted 26-4 Tuesday night to close Unit A.

Although board members continued to disagree about the numbers provided by Stammen's department to show the unit's profitability in its first 27 months of operation, most of them agreed that it was not in taxpayers' best interests to continue operating the jail wing.

The board rejected suggestions from several supervisors, including Chairman Marty Krueger and Law Enforceent Committee Chairman Don Stevens, that the county should continue operating the unit until further analysis can be done.
