DOC Will Provide Man Power To Parks

Burlington Parks and Recreation Director Mari Steinbach said a new arrangement with the state Department of Corrections’ Work Crew Office will put more DOC workers on the job than in the past.

The workers, nonincarcerated individuals sentenced to community service, are putting in about 30 hours a week on crews at city cemeteries, general Parks Department maintenance work, and Memorial Auditorium, Steinbach said.

Michael Merchant, a community service team leader in Barre, said the program “returns value to the community. People aren’t sitting around in a jail cell,” he said. “They’re doing community service in nonprofits, municipalities, and state and federal agencies.”
