PEMBROKE — A Pembroke woman has been sent to jail and ordered to pay back the $180,000 that she stole over the course of two years from the hair salon where she worked as a manager. Karyn Akley, 48, was charged with stealing from $300 to $500 a day between 2005 and 2007 while working at Personal Best at Utopia Place, a Pembroke salon. Pembroke police said they discovered that Akley covered up the stealing by showing, in the salon’s financial books, that the money went to customers who had redeemed gift cards. The salon owner, Marie Goldman, said she became suspicious after noticing a significant drop in revenue and an increase in the number of gift cards being redeemed for cash. Customers were typically only allowed to redeem gift cards for services at the Washington Street salon. Read More. |
