| Prison Video Will Have Restricted Release |

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A federal judge issued a protective order this morning that allows the reproduction of a of a videotape involving the handling of a prisoner who died while in the custody of the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility two years ago, but places stiff restrictions on the tape's release. U.S. District Court Judge William E. Smith said that ``absent the context of trial testimony,'' the release of the videotape would prejudice potential jurors who could determine whether the prisoner's wife and children prevail in the civil trial. For the past year, lawyers for the family of Hiu Lui ``Jason'' Ng and the federal government have been battling over the release of the tapes. Smith's order calls for the Central Falls Detention Facility Corp, the governing board for the jail, to create copies of the videotape for the government and Ng's lawyers. It also bars the dissemination of the tape to anyone not authorized in the order, saying those distributing it could face sanctions. Read More. |
