| Jail Meal Issues Delayed |

With the process for providing food for prisoners coming under scrutiny in Dawes County’s most recent audit, the commissioners and Sheriff Karl Dailey met to discuss options but made no changes to the procedures for now. Dailey currently does all of the shopping, including for prisoners with special dietary needs, and receives a $7 per prisoner per day reimbursement from the county. He does not turn in store receipts, just a sheet showing how many prisoners he had and how many days they stayed, multiplied by $7. Auditor Jada Thompson said earlier this month he should either turn in receipts and be reimbursed for the actual cost on them or have a written contract for the per diem. Dailey and the commissioners met on the subject last week but took no action to change things yet. Instead, they agreed to do some research on various options and revisit the issue within the next month or so. Dailey suggested a third route for the commissioners to consider, beyond that recommended by Thompson. He said that after visiting with other sheriffs, it’s his understanding that the Nebraska Association of County Officials recommends paying the sheriff $10,000 a year for running the jail and pays for the actual cost of food based on receipts or a contract with a food provider.
