County Jail Holding State Prisoners

The Oconee County Jail has been home to about 70 inmates from Clarke County for about three weeks, Berry said.

"It's worked out real well," he said. "It's really been a positive arrangement."

Only about 30 local inmates are housed at Oconee County's 140-bed jail, so the county makes money by charging other governments to house their excess inmates.

The agreement calls for Oconee County to house 70 male Clarke County inmates and a flexible number of female inmates at a cost of $35 per inmate per day.

They mostly are minimum- and medium-security inmates, but a few are maximum-security, Berry said. Most already have been sentenced and are not awaiting trial, he said.
