The Oconee County Jail has been home to about 70 inmates from Clarke County for about three weeks, Berry said. "It's worked out real well," he said. "It's really been a positive arrangement." Only about 30 local inmates are housed at Oconee County's 140-bed jail, so the county makes money by charging other governments to house their excess inmates. The agreement calls for Oconee County to house 70 male Clarke County inmates and a flexible number of female inmates at a cost of $35 per inmate per day. They mostly are minimum- and medium-security inmates, but a few are maximum-security, Berry said. Most already have been sentenced and are not awaiting trial, he said. Read More. |
