Guard's Firing Discovered To Be Fair

A state arbitrator has upheld the firing of a Fayette County Prison guard who was terminated after an inmate hanged himself in a cell.

In a written opinion released Wednesday, arbitrator Robert A. Creo found the prison board was justified in terminating Barry Simon of Uniontown because Simon falsified a report after the suicide was discovered.

Inmate Cade W. Stevens, 25, of Dawson was found hanging in his cell Sept. 12. Although his cell was under video surveillance, Stevens made two unsuccessful attempts to hang himself before succeeding on the third try, Creo said.
