| Senator Wants New Reforms In Prisons |

On the heels of a report criticizing Ohio's probation structure and sentences for low-level offenders, a Cincinnati Republican said it's long past time for lawmakers to start reforming the state's prison system. "This is not an ideological issue," Sen. Bill Seitz said yesterday as he and others involved in Ohio's criminal-justice system were briefed on a new report by the Council of State Governments. "This is about two things: saving money and putting our resources to what works to reduce recidivism. What's not to like about that?" Seitz, with backing from Gov. Ted Strickland, has been fighting for 18 months to enact sentencing changes that would reduce the number of low-level offenders in Ohio prisons through earned early release, judicial release for certain prisoners, and evened penalties for crack and cocaine. Facing opposition from law enforcement and prosecutors, the bill stalled in the GOP-controlled Senate. Meanwhile, House Democrats last year stripped the measure from the state budget. Read More. |
