| County Asks For Millions To Help Out |

BAY MINETTE, Alabama -- Baldwin County Sheriff Huey "Hoss" Mack asked county commissioners for $20 million to run his department next year, but $2.1 million could be cut if revenue falls short, officials said. Mack said his office has run under budget this year, and commissioners said the unspent balance could be used to help pay for next year's operations. His employees have not had cost of living adjustments or merit raises since September 2009, the sheriff said. Crimes reported declined in 2009, he said, and the average number of people in the jail each day fell to 530 -- about 100 inmates less than the previous year. He credited the decline to timely referrals to Circuit Court and participation in drug court as well as pre-trial and community corrections programs. Read More. |
