An inmate hanged himself inside his cell Thursday at the Mesa County Detention Facility, authorities said. Octavio Vargas-Herrera was found in his cell about 11:54 p.m. Thursday by a deputy, who was performing a routine security check, the Mesa County Sheriff's Office said Friday afternoon. Attempts to revive Vargas-Herrera failed. He was being held at the jail on charges of first-degree murder and a federal immigration hold. Vargas-Herrera had been in the detention facility since March 14. A review of security logs showed Vargas-Herrera was alive about a half-hour before being found by the deputy.
