THE Fiji Prisons and Correctional Services has acquired five acres of land in the Western Division to set up a commercial farm there. Come August, the department hopes to plant 5000 pawpaw plants and 5000 egg plants near the Natabua Prison. In the north, the prison is agro-based because inmates are from farming backgrounds and this is similar with the prisons in Taveuni. There are 12 prisons in Fiji. Today, when a person is implicated they are assessed before they either go to carpentry, agriculture or painting. At any one time there are 40 prisoners working in the gardens. Read More. |
