| Growing Numbers Won't Affect New Jail |

The still-sluggish housing estate market allowed project planners Kitchell Corp. to restore nearly 16,000 square feet of space that had been trimmed from the new Calaveras County jail plans, according to Kitchell’s project director, Doug Evans. Evans told the Board of Supervisors at its Tuesday meeting that the added space wouldn’t add to the cost of the 280-bed jail, and in fact he expected bids to come in at 20 percent below the $44.4 million budget, or even lower. Bids for similar projects have come in 20 to 30 percent below estimates all over the state, and in some cases nearly 50 percent.
