In a tense neighborhood meeting at Helman Elementary School Monday night, Quiet Village residents discussed picketing, putting up warning signs and taking legal action against a homeowner who rents a Nevada Street house to three convicted sex offenders. "This is putting dozens of little children at risk and we're just hoping that nothing bad happens," said Quiet Village resident John Barth. "Once it happens it's too late." The homeowner, Eugene Haag, told the 35 neighbors gathered in the school library that he has no intention of changing the way he rents his home, which he said has housed sex offenders and others on parole since 1974. Haag, a regional chaplain for the Oregon Department of Corrections, said he rents rooms to sex offenders in order to help them rehabilitate their lives. Read More. |
