ASPEN — A woman who embezzled more than $700,000 from Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village while working there as a bookkeeper was sentenced to four years in the Department of Corrections on Monday. Marlana Lu Howell's prison term is scheduled to begin Tuesday, following her August 2009 arrest. The sentence, delivered by District Judge James Boyd, went against a probation officer's recommendation that Howell's punishment include probation but no prison time. But after listening to testimony from both advocates of Howell, who sought leniency from the court, and from Bruce Berger, treasurer of the Snowmass nonprofit's board of directors, Boyd concluded that four years in the Department of Corrections was the appropriate punishment for Howell. He also ordered her to pay $178,548 in restitution toward the $736,000 she bilked from Anderson Ranch. Read More. |
