| Less State Inmates Means Less Money |

County jails across the state are facing serious financial problems because of current state corrections policy, Henderson Fiscal Court was told Tuesday. The main reason the Henderson County Detention Center has operated in the black in recent years is that it has housed large numbers of state and federal inmates, as well as inmates for other counties. But state inmates are being cut back, Capt. Amy Nelson told the court. She noted that in June of last year the state paid the jail for housing 311 state inmates, while it was 278 this June. Last July the jail had 307 state inmates, while last month it housed 252. "If this trend continues we're looking at losing approximately $200,000 this fiscal year," she said. Read More. |
