| 2 jail officers slightly hurt by inmate |

An inmate under suicide watch at the Brevard County (Fla.) jail lunged at two corrections officers Thursday morning, injuring them slightly. Cpl. Robbie Stokes and Officer Michael Michaud required treatment at Wuesthoff Hospital in Rockledge, said Greg Futch, jail administrator. Thursday's incident comes as jail officials continue their efforts to ease tensions at the troubled facility in the wake of five apparent suicides, and several attempts, since December. Doctors treated Stokes for a neck injury and Michaud for back injuries, Futch said. After treatment, the two were released from the hospital. The inmate, Lavonia Tolbert, 35, was not injured during the scuffle and remains under close supervision, Futch said. The administrator said he does not know why the inmate struck out at the officers. Futch said Tolbert, after threatening to harm himself, had been placed under a 24-hour suicide watch inside a glass-enclosed area called the bubble. Tolbert lunged at the officers as they entered the bubble. "This incident Thursday illustrates many of the mental-health problems we have at this facility," Futch said. "We simply do not have the staff to cope with some of these problems. We should not be piling people into these bubbles, but we have no other place to put them." Tolbert has been held at the jail since December. He has been charged with several crimes including carjacking and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. He now faces new assault charges stemming from Thursday's incident. He was one of 13 inmates under suicide watch when the incident occurred about 9:30 a.m. |
