But 30 years after a bungled police investigation and a barefaced lie allowed the man who sexually assaulted and murdered her 11-year-old son to walk free, it finally arrived Wednesday. Ronald Rice, who prosectors said had privately boasted for more than a decade that he got away with strangling Kociolek's Boy Scout son Edwin Gulbransen, came clean at the Markham courthouse, pleading guilty to murder. The 80-year sentence Judge Douglas Simpson imposed means Rice, 56, will die behind bars. It gives Kociolek "some sense of redemption," she said Thursday. She last saw her son alive on June 22, 1980, when he went to fetch some milk. When she left her Oak Forest home to look for him, his bike was lying on the side of the road, but he had vanished.
