GUAM - From the outside, the Department of Corrections (DOC) complex is structured like a fortress. Despite appearances, there is a lot of beauty to be found behind these walls. At the Green Valley Farm, inmates grow long beans, eggplants, pineapples and other crops. They also raise chickens and pigs. Programs like this not only teach inmates valuable skills, they also help them give back to the community. The Green Valley Farm is located here in the middle of the DOC facility. The farm started 3 years ago and has been thriving ever since. Corrections Officer Franciso Mesa oversees the farm. He comments, "I have a total of 8 inmates right now working. They are in medium custody. What they do around here is they plant any kind of vegetable you can think of, we have them here. We got about 21 pigs and maybe 30 chickens." Read More. |
