Last year the Minnesota Department of Corrections released 7,994 offenders from state prisons. Each month approximately 300 people are released from the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center (ADC). Those are scary numbers, because the statistics tell us the vast majority of convicted criminals are not willing or able to change their ways and thus will return to crime, be arrested, and once again incarcerated. That is an important initiative, but how do we accomplish that? The four new police officers may increase police presence in parts of the city, but will they really change the number of crimes committed? History does not support that conclusion. Local judges, county attorneys, and public defenders are drowning in a backlog of cases and need to be better staffed. There is little legislative hope for that happening soon. Read More. |
