Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral and members of the custody and non-custody staff of the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department took part in several National Night Out events throughout the neighborhoods of Boston, Chelsea, and Revere. An annual celebration, National Night Out is a program that cultivates and strengthens partnerships among the community, youth, law enforcement, city agencies and community-based organizations. National Night Out also acknowledges the remarkable contributions of Neighborhood Watch groups, and seeks to increase participation in Neighborhood Watch programs among local residents. Manning tables for National Night Out (NNO) events throughout the communities of Suffolk County, Sheriff's Department staff handed out Safety Tips For Kids coloring books and crayons, and Junior Deputy badges and t-shirts to participants attending events in Roslindale, Hyde Park, Chelsea, Revere, Dorchester, the North End, South Boston, the Fenway, Chinatown, among others. During one stop along visits to multiple NNO locations throughout Suffolk County, Sheriff Cabral spoke with attendees and organizers about the significance of the event and the need to continue working together for public safety. "This is one of our safest communities and that's because everyone here works so hard and works together to keep it safe," said Sheriff Cabral during her stop in Boston's Chinatown. "It's a pleasure to be here to applaud this community, especially all of the parents that are here with their kids because it's so important. Thank you for all that you do and for all that you bring the City of Boston." Following visits to other NNO stations, Sheriff Cabral arrived at the main event in Dorchester's Franklin Park where she greeted the night's participants and addressed the importance of collaborative efforts between members of the community and local law enforcement. "It has been eight years that I've served as Sheriff of Suffolk County," Sheriff Cabral began. "Much of what we have been able to accomplish in those years - and there has been a lot - is because we had your help. Everyone else has said it - at the end of the day, it has to be a partnership between folks in the community and law enforcement." "Many of you know about the programs that we now have in the Sheriff's Department," continued Sheriff Cabral. "We are helping people to find jobs, get back on their feet and take advantage of opportunities. My message to them is 'get out, and stay out. I don't want to see you back in here again.' The city works with us and we work with other law enforcement agencies to make sure that this happens." In closing, Sheriff Cabral again praised those in attendance for their efforts in helping to keep their respective communities safe and offered encouragement for the work that lies ahead. "I want to thank you for being so invested in what goes on in your community and for your willingness to be a partner," said Sheriff Cabral. "We can see the results of your efforts and we just need to keep doing it and keep working towards it to make the city safer. In working together, we will all be able to accomplish even more. I appreciate the opportunity that I've had to work with you and I look forward to continuing to work with you in the future."
