LODI, CA (AP) -- California crime victims have left $11 million sitting in a state account, often because the victims don't know they are entitled to the restitution paid by convicted criminals. California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokeswoman Terry Thornton said Monday victims can call a toll-free number, 1 (877) 256-6877 1 (877) 256-6877 , to see if they are owed money. The department says judges order criminals to pay restitution in about 11 percent of convictions. A law that took effect this year makes it easier to collect the money by garnishing wages and tax refunds after inmates are released from prison. The Lodi News-Sentinel reported only about a third of the collections are paid out to victims. The department says victims often move, change their names or can't be reached. Read More. |
