WILKES-BARRE – Nearly 19 years after the poisoning death of Robert Curley, the fight for his insurance benefits began Monday. Five years after receiving her husband’s death benefits, Joann Curley, 46, was sentenced in July 1997 to 10 to 20 years in state prison after pleading guilty to intentionally lacing Robert Curley’s iced tea with thallium. She is jailed at the State Correctional Institution at Cambridge Springs in Crawford County, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections. Robert Curley’s mother, Mary Curley, filed a lawsuit in 1998 against People Life, which was acquired by Monumental Life Insurance in 1999, claiming her son’s insurance policy should have been paid to his estate.
