Despite decades of being actively involved in the lives of some fairly troubled youth — 20 years at McLaughlin working with the Street Gangs Prison Connection program for the Alaska Department of Corrections, as well as some time working for the New York City Sheriff’s Department on a prison gang unit — Ray Ortiz is anxious about his new job here in Homer. Actually, maybe a better description of his feelings would be “nervously excited.” “Let’s say I am cautiously optimistic about positive changes we can make in Homer,” Ortiz said of his job as Homer’s Juvenile Probation Officer for the State of Alaska. “This is a great community.
