KENNEWICK -- A 19-year-old Richland woman who admitted she helped deliver methamphetamine hopes to be one of the first people in the state to take advantage of a new sentencing alternative to avoid prison time. The Family and Offender Sentencing Alternative, which went into effect June 10, is designed to allow nonviolent defendants with minor children to get supervision and treatment instead of prison. The law, approved by the Legislature earlier this year, was designed to help keep families together and break the cycle of intergenerational crime, according to the state Department of Corrections. Information was not immediately available Wednesday on how many, if any, defendants have been sentenced under the new program. Read More. |
