| Officer's Kid's School Will Close |

The small school that has served the children of employees at McNeil Island Corrections Center for more than 50 years will close, the Steilacoom Historical School District announced Wednesday. With the downsizing of McNeil by the Washington State Department of Corrections, fewer parents will live on the island and state officials say they can no longer justify keeping the school open. Started as a school in 1953, Harriet Taylor Elementary School was named after a former corrections center employee. It is one of 10 “remote and necessary schools” scattered throughout the state, with most housing students in isolated communities east of the Cascades.
