Third inmate arrested after tip |

Sometime in the past few weeks, in a special medical unit of the Metro Jail, inmate William Clay Bohanan furtively set his escape plan in motion. As part of his preparations, he began making a dye from materials he scrounged. The purpose? To darken his white underwear, making it less noticeable under the moonlight when it came time to peel off his bright orange jumpsuit during his getaway. He also took bedsheets from other inmates, never letting on that he planned to string together more than 20 as a rope, jail officials said yesterday. One fellow escapee was arrested Monday, and the last of the three, Billy Leo Potts Jr., 39, was arrested last week in an alley near Chet Atkins Place and 17th Avenue South. Two people who saw Potts' photo in media reports recognized him and tipped police, officials said. Potts told officers he was waiting on them to pick him up and take him away, said Tony Crawford, a senior inspector with the U.S. Marshals Service. Metro police were assisted by Vanderbilt University security officers in making the arrest about 8:30 p.m. Potts offered no resistance to West Precinct Officer Todd Daniel, Crawford said. He faces additional charges of escape and vandalism for damage done to the jail during the breakout. Police think he was in the Music Row area much of the time after fleeing. The weekend escape, masterminded by Bohanan, had a level of sophistication not like anything the sheriff's office has seen, Sheriff Daron Hall said yesterday. ''I will tell you that we are confident that the way this escape happened, and exactly what they used to do this ... won't happen again,'' Hall said yesterday during a news conference. ''Our challenge is to stay ahead of the next planned type of an escape.'' |
