| OK Lawmakers Worried Over Bed Cutting |

NEWS that the Department of Corrections is eliminating some of its community-level beds in order to save money ought to strike a chord with members of the Legislature and with those who plan to vote in November on a school funding proposal. The Legislature, at some point, will have to seriously look at how we handle crime and punishment in Oklahoma. A million-dollar study of our corrections and parole systems, conducted at the Legislature's request a few years ago, offered scores of reform ideas but there hasn't been much in the way of follow-up. We continue to send people to jail and prison at a high rate — in announcing recently that the DOC was canceling a contract for beds that house public work crews in Tulsa, agency Director Justin Jones noted that the DOC saw the net number of offenders in the system grow by more than 700 in the last fiscal year.
