Feds Tour Prison To Convert From State

Lansing -- U.S. Bureau of Prisons officials will visit closed Standish prison again Tuesday and Wednesday with a mind toward possibly converting it into a federal prison.

The federal team is expected to tour Standish Maximum Correctional Facility in the morning and have lunch with city officials in the afternoon. They're also expected to meet with about 20 property owners.

"They need to do an environmental and tech assessment ... and as a part of that the EPA (federal Environmental Protection Agency) and other folks will have to go onto some of the property," said Russ Marlan, spokesman for the state Department of Corrections. "They want them to sign access agreements to allow folks involved to step on the property.
