Just five months after more than 200 Vermont inmates were transferred to Marion Adjustment Center, two have been sent back to Vermont after allegedly being sexually assaulted by a correctional officer and the rest are being transferred to another prison in Kentucky. According to MAC Warden Caroline Mudd, in April, a Vermont inmate claimed that a male correctional officer had sexually assaulted him. MAC immediately began an investigation and reported the allegations to Kentucky State Police who are conducting a criminal investigation, Mudd said. The correctional officer, who was accused of sexually assaulting the inmate, was fired May 1 because he failed to participate in the investigation, she said. Following the initial allegations, another Vermont inmate filed a complaint and said the officer also sexually assaulted him. Mudd said no inmate has ever made a formal complaint of sexual assault at MAC. Mudd said prison officials took the allegation very seriously. According to a news article published in the Brattleboro Reformer, a newspaper in Vermont, one of the two inmates is pursuing civil action against Corrections Corporation of America, the private company that runs MAC. The 19-year-old man is seeking $75,000 in damages for psychological injury he suffered from the alleged abuse. The suit also alleges that the man's constitutional right against cruel and unusual punishment had been violated. |
