| WA Prison Islands Closes School For Kids |

The Washington State Department of Corrections leases McNeil Island from the federal government. Families who live there rent their homes from the state. The state has started to reassign workers to other prisons and has told families they have to move. This month, the Steilacoom Historic School District announced it will close its one–room schoolhouse on McNeil Island. Sanders: "I liked it 'cause I didn't have to remember so many names." Carissa Sanders is eight. She went to the Harriet Taylor School on McNeil Island ever since kindergarten. Now she's going into third grade.
