After about three hours of deliberations, a Monroe County jury convicted a Berks County man last Tuesday of murdering his cellmate in the Monroe County Prison in 2001. Luis Manuel Suriel-Abreu, 40, whose last known address was on Elm Street in Reading, was convicted of third-degree murder, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, tampering with evidence and assault by a prisoner. Suriel-Abreu, who defended himself at the five-day trial at the courthouse in Stroudsburg, fatally beat inmate John Michael Flanagan, 36, of Cresco. Two days before the beating, police said, the two inmates had been in an argument during which Flanagan ''disrespected Suriel-Abreu's family.'' Flanagan's death was the first homicide at the prison in Snydersville. After the beating, Flanagan made his way back to his cell, dripping blood along the way, police said. Flanagan, who was found in the cell by prison employees, was taken to Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg, where he died. The coroner's office said he died of internal bleeding caused by a ruptured spleen. A sentencing date was not scheduled, but Suriel-Abreu is expected to be sentenced within three months. |
